Frankie was surprised by how very different the disembarking port was from Cairo. The further south they had come, the fewer peddlers met the cruise ship to tempt passengers with their wares.

Knowing the motorcar meant to meet them should be there soon, if not already waiting, she and Henry disembarked midday. They'd spent the morning making love and had packed hastily, leaving their private retreat with regret.

At least on Frankie's part. She had no doubt Henry was eager to reach the dig.

As the midday sun greeted them, Frankie could do nothing but be grateful that they did not excavate in the height of summer.

She'd spent time in the Mojave Desert, so she thought she knew what to expect. But this was different. People went about their business in this heat, working, unloading cargo, moving goods.

It was a small riverside port and she didn't think the town it was attached to had a huge population, but the people who lived there were not hiding in their homes from the heat. They were out and about.

This was their life.

As expected, a motorcar waited for them, along with one of the men from Henry's university. It was the assistant professor, Daniel Adams.

"At your service." The tall blond man, who looked to be Frankie's age or younger, put out his hand to shake briskly. "Everyone else has headed out to the dig," he informed Henry. "Professor Miller left me to ride in with you."

It suddenly occurred to Frankie that not only had Henry personally paid for their more decadent and infinitely more private cruise along the Nile, but he had given up precious time to make it possible.

The cargo and passenger ferry had arrived two days before and most likely so had this man and his colleagues, as the drive could have been made easily in one day. Barring complication.

Henry would be the last to arrive to his own excavation site.

Something cracked inside her. She was very much afraid that it was another of the walls she'd built up around her heart.

Ignoring the inconvenient emotion, Frankie said with as much Edwin inspired bon homme as she could muster, "Good to see you again, Professor Adams."

"Call me Daniel," the assistant professor said jovially. "No need to stand on ceremony. You aren't one of my students."

"My friends call me Frankie," she responded in kind.

"Adams here will call you Mr. Clarke." Henry's tone was unbending, his expression forbidding.

The assistant professor looked surprised, but then shrugged. "If you like. Afraid of offending his rich father?"

But Henry simply ignored the taunt and said, "Let's get going."

Frankie wasn't sure what that was all about, but she thought Henry was right to encourage a certain formal distance between Frankie and the others. Less chance of being caught out after the fact if she ran into either of them back in California. No matter how unlikely that might be.

Daniel Adams waited until Henry had walked ahead to give Frankie a look and whisper. "He's a crank, but the old man knows what he's doing on a dig.
